Had a very fraught evening yesterday. Just as I was juggling pots and pans out of the Rayburn Farmer T arrived with our new pet lamb, ‘Frizzle’, as the children have named her. The tea got abandoned, while milk was mixed, and the kitchen was taken over by empty bottles and teats, muddy boots and other paraphernalia as the evening feed was organised.

Farmer T plonked in kitchen, cup of coffee in hand, homemade pizza arrived out of the oven looking ever so slightly burned, perhaps I am not so good at multi tasking after all.

As farmer T left I tried again to get the children’s tea onto plates, hands washed and juice poured out, but as his truck left the yard, the BT boy’s truck drove in. The happy farmer was in his element, a ‘wee’ dram was called for as the boys piled into the farmhouse. There was no chance of them ‘spoiling’ our dinner though, or our feast getting burnt, because our tea was nowhere near ready, the happy farmer had said he would cook.

So children fed I went and joined them all for a chat, by 8.30pm though, I could have eaten the chair leg, I was so hungry. Eventually I plucked up the courage to enquire
‘er…have you eaten? Would you like to join us for tea?’
I don’t think they could see my fingers crossed tightly behind my back, as I mentally pleaded with them to say ‘no, and we are just going…’ which bless them they did!

All was forgiven as the happy farmer set about cooking the most delicious pepperoni pasta. One which he has made on many occasions, once for our vegetarian friend, who happily ate the whole lot, had seconds, and then asked the happy farmer for the recipe. As he reeled off his list of ingredients I gently died in the corner as I watched the colour drain from my friend’s face when he mentioned the ‘pepperoni’. Not only had she eaten meat, but a very unhealthy bit of meat at that, eek. She did forgive the happy farmer but I don’t think she ever ate pasta again.

As we sat down to our meal, the children all tucked up in bed, I was just enjoying the peace, trying not to shovel in the food too quickly to ease my hungry stomach, when the happy farmer announced that he has actually invited the BT boys for a meal on Wednesday evening, that gives me one quiet night then!

Until next time….

  7. Yep, I once fed my veggie friend meat in the stock by accident. Didn't own up to it as I thought it was worse for her to know - some friend! I go into meltdown if I'm not fed and watered regularly! xx
